Welcome to ABOUTAsia Schools|
IAMCambodia has been renamed ABOUTAsia Schools to reflect better the regional ambitions of the rural schools
project and convey more clearly the close relationship with ABOUTAsia Travel.
Several websites for organisations based in ABOUTAsia House, Siem Reap, currently point to this page, including the domain
for Siem Reap Film Society. These sites may currently be under development. Please feel free to browse using the links on
the left to access the new ABOUTAsia Schools website.
ABOUTAsia Schools supports education in several ways:
1. We recruit volunteer teachers and assistants to schools, particularly to assist English Language teaching.
2. We provide basic classroom supplies, such as books, pencils, chalk etc, to existing schools to strengthen and sustain
their teaching programs.
3. We provide uniforms to allow the poorest of children to attend school within the law.
4. We assist capital projects such as the installation of water filtration units or the building of new classrooms.
We currently provide volunteer teachers, supplies, uniforms and computers to 25 different schools and 12,500 students (Dec '10).
Our target is to reach 36,000 students by the end of 2011.
ABOUTAsia Schools is supported by ABOUTAsia Travel
ABOUTAsia Travel was founded by Andrew Booth to supply a sustainable source of income for IAMCambodia (now ABOUTAsia Schools),
which he co-founded with David Chase. Andrew felt that some tourist money should stay in Siem Reap and benefit the local people,
and felt that any charitable effort had to be sustainable rather than relying on fund-raising efforts (although donations
are always welcomed, and efficiently used!
Most charities that recruit volunteers charge very high fees. We at ABOUTAsia think that this is morally wrong - many (particularly young)
people who are time-rich are not money-rich. ABOUTAsia Schools does not charge volunteers fees - they do have to pay
their own way to, and in, Cambodia - but Cambodia is not an expensive place to live (it is possible to stay in a local house and eat on
a few US dollars a day, although some prefer more modern comforts in guesthouses).
After visiting Cambodia, Andrew also felt that the fledgling tourist industry could be done better. Many local firms lack knowledge
of the modern travel industry, particularly with todays breed of Independent Traveller from the West. Similarly, most luxury tour
operators have high overheads, and charge as much for a visit to Cambodia as to the developed world. ABOUTAsia uses Western know-how
to develop and market a travel company that caters to demanding independently-minded travelers, and creates local jobs in Siem Reap and
Cambodia to provide very high quality customised travel solutions that are extremely competitively priced. Luxury travel doesn't have to
break the bank!
Most importantly, the surplus generated by the Travel company pays for the administration of the Volunteer Programme, and contributes to
the Support Programmes of ABOUTAsia Schools
